Through the Streets of Hamburg with a Camera

An increasing number of people are discovering their creative bent and combining their hobby with a city break. Hamburg, with its many different facets, is a real paradise for photographers in search of the perfect shot.

On the one hand, there is contemporary Hamburg, with the Hafencity andexciting buildings like the Elbe Philharmonic Hall (even if it isn’t quite finished yet) and the "Berliner Bogen" on Anckelmannsplatz. And of course, the "Tanzende Türme" that are right next door to the ARCOTEL Onyx on the Reeperbahn. Yet as well as the many new buildings, Hamburg also has plenty to offer in the way of spectacular "mixed architecture". Set off with your camera to explore the Speicherstadt  warehouse district and you’ll findimposing brick buildings, sometimes complemented by contemporary glass and steel architecture. Incidentally, the Speicherstadt is the largest continuous warehouse complex in the world. And of course, the city on the Elbe also has a host of historic buildings, churches, monuments and all sorts of other architecturally exciting motifs.

But Hamburg is not just a treat for architecture lovers. If you‘re on the lookout for "urban life style", hoping to capture "real life", the various districts of the Hanseatic city have plenty to offer by both day and night. First and foremost of course on the Reeperbahn. Whether you go at half past one in the morning or at dawn when the "world’s most sinful mile" is still asleep, the district of St.Pauli will set your photographer‘s heart racing. Things are much more dignified around the Alster and the quintessence of the Hanseatic bourgeoisie can best be photographed in Blankenese. If you fancy a complete contrast you should definitely take your camera to the trendy, whimsical and controversial "Schanzenviertel". And don’t be afraid to go looking for shots in the small side streets away from the "Sternschanze" or the "Schulterblatt". It really is worth it.
If you want a bit of everything, you should try the district of St. Georg. This area, which is home to our second hotel, the ARCOTEL Rubin, is a reflection of Hamburg in all its facets – from the trendy Lange Reihe, to the multicultural Steindamm.

The extensive port area, parks such as "Planten un blomen" and the Stadtpark, the Inner and Outer Alster lakes, and the nearby "Altes Land" offer perfect subjects for wide format and detailed landscape photography.

So polish your lenses, pack your camera bag and set off on your Hamburg photo safari.

ARCOTEL Hotels and VERPOORTEN make Hobby Bakers’ Dreams Come True!

"Win a place at a baking workshop and at the same time spend a luxury weekend in the 4-star superior hotel ARCOTEL Rubin Hamburg, including travel to and from the hotel." That was the invitation to all amateur baking enthusiasts who didn't want to miss this fantastic opportunity. ARCOTEL Hotels and VERPOORTEN gave away places at this very special culinary summit meeting, which included hotel accommodation, in a prize draw and made 16 participants extremely happy.

A World Champion Pastry Chef met a "yellow classic" at the 4-star superior hotel ARCOTEL Rubin. With her heavenly recipes, the World Champion Pastry Chef Andrea Schirmaier-Huber (35) belongs to the nation's culinary elite and sets the standard for unusual and exquisite baked goods. Baking enthusiasts now had the perfect opportunity to learn from her at a one-off bakery workshop at the ARCOTEL Rubin. Together they prepared culinary creations using the "yellow classic" according to fail-safe recipes developed by Andrea Schirmaier-Huber exclusively for the family-owned business VERPOORTEN from Bonn. She also gave valuable baking tips and showed the group a number of tricks as well as demonstrating the versatility of VERPOORTEN ORIGINAL as an ingredient in tasty recipes.

The list of recipes that were tried out at the baking workshop at the ARCOTEL Rubin delighted the group even before things got started. The programme included Amore Cake Pops, Love Muffins with Strawberries and VERPOORTEN, and spring cheesecake cup-cakes.

KLAGENFURT – The Rose of Lake Wörthersee

Yes, yes, everyone knows the “Schloss am Wörthersee” TV series – and it’s surely very exciting too. But today I’m not looking forward to the Klagenfurt from the television. Today I am exploring the city behind the idyllic image in the glossy brochures…

9.30 a.m.: “Good things come in small packages”, or even better, “small, but punches above its weight”:  A real insider’s tip, because it’s different, extremely stylish, food for the soul and soothing for the senses. And to crown it all off: the courtyard through the back that is open all year long – protected from the elements with a sail-cloth covering, heated and furnished with comfy chairs, it invites you to relax and unwind – just magnificent.

More information available at: www.petitcafe.at

11:30 a.m.: After a plentiful breakfast that is enough for the whole day, I set off on a rather special shopping trip based on the motto of “shop till you drop":

Destination 1: Veinzelstück: Ideal for those who are not looking for mass products, but for something special. A young label that stands for daring kids’ stuff and high-quality accessories for children and adults. And the best thing of all is that each article is made in small batches by hand.

More information available at: www.veinzelstueck.at

Destination 2: Mass products, no thanks; get down to Vintagebox. Unique products as far as the eye can see, and, designed and produced personally by the shop-owner – using nothing but environmentally friendly materials. What you can find: pictures, small side tables, little boxes, cushions, decorations, gifts and small souvenirs, all designed with a unique interpretation of vintage products.

More information available at: www.vintagebox.at

Destination 3: “I want a house, a multi-coloured house…" – or better still, a villa. And if I can’t live in it, then I can at least shop in it. An ingenious idea, sure to fulfil many dreams. This sweet villa with a blooming garden and a shop featuring a retro country house design simply enthralled me and it just doesn’t want to let me go, funny, isn’t it?! I feel as if I have just arrived home and I want to buy everything, or better still, just hang around … but unfortunately, everyone wakes up from their dreams sooner or later.

More information available at: www.villa-lotta.at

8.00 p.m.: This day has just been magical, and so it needs its own soundtrack. No sooner said than done – at least this is the time for music, or more precisely, for Europe’s largest keyboard museum. This is a real highlight for music lovers. Vintage keyboards from global stars are on display in a 1700 m² exhibition. This unique location also regularly offers live concerts.

More information available at: www.eboardmuseum.com

10.00 p.m.: To finish off I visit the scene for art, culture and anti-mainstream sound: ((stereo)) – Club & Culture Events Centre.

VIENNA’S DIFFERENT – ISN’T IT?!

Vienna calling! I wake up to this somewhat different alarm clock in one of the cities with the highest living standards in the world, but which also has a slightly morbid preoccupation with death … but not me, and so I head out to discover why Vienna is supposed to be the greatest city in the world…

9.00 a.m.: Shabby chic of the first class in an enchanting setting that could not be more original. The place simply enthralled me, both the interior and the artful garden, while the scent of the beguiling delicacies lured me into the heart of this treasure trove. And the best thing about it is:  not only can I spoil myself with a fabulous breakfast and admire the location furnished with a great love for detail, I can also buy bits of the furnishings to take home. What a great idea!
More information available at: www.purelivingbakery.com

10.30 a.m.: Now that I am in the mood for shopping, I have no choice but to give in to this internal urge. Always follow your nose, and I definitely have a sense for some extraordinary shopping destinations. Vienna’s 7thdistrict awaits me with a range of unique and incomparable stores. I’ve obviously already done my homework. And my favourite is Gloom.
More information available at: www.gloom.at

1.00 p.m.: Time for a breather and some country-air feeling right in the heart of the city: Villa Aurora is the key to this type of happiness. Somewhat hidden between trees and shrubs, the gateway to freedom is there if you look closely: culinary delights, up on high. That’s all I’m saying. Classy: a picnic basket complete with blanket for a well-earned rest on the grass nearby, and a breath-taking view over Vienna, but you can also just drop in to the restaurant.
More information available at: www.wien.info/de/orte/villa-aurora

3.30 p.m.: Now from this wonderful, heavenly place to another heavenly place, with a slight difference: “Death must surely be a Viennese!”: “A Banklreißn”, “die Patschnstreckn”, “die Bock aufstön” … the Viennese dialect has a variety of colourful ways to express that moment of passing away. It is generally believed that the Viennese have a particularly loving relationship with death. And since I’m here to tread some new paths, the following destinations will round my day off:

Ready for „Summer on Stross“?

One of the most romantic promenades in Zagreb is most certainly the Strossmayer promenade. The first public Zagreb promenade was named after the renowned bishop Strossmayer, in 1874, who did good deeds not only for the city of Zagreb but also for all Croatia. The promenade is located in the Upper Town at the foot of the Lotrščak Tower with a beautiful view of the city from which traditionally every day a cannon shot indicates striking of noon.
Accompanied by dense shadows of wild chestnut trees, it is one of the most beautiful places to relax or take a walk in the morning or at dusk. The romantic atmosphere of the promenade is complemented by gas lanterns and lamps designed by Hugo Ehrlich as well as with benches alongside the promenade. In 1890 a funicular was put in motion so as to better connect the lower part of the city of Zagreb with Gradec. While today’s form the Strossmayer’s promenade gets in 1912.
In order to revive the spirit of the beautiful promenade, this year also welcomes the project “Summer on Stross” with selected musical programme, art illustrations, fun games and raffles, artists and their canvases and many other forms of entertainment. From 29 May to 2 September 2013 the citizens of Zagreb and its many tourists will have the opportunity to enjoy a full 100 days of fun and summer months in the Croatian capital. With the sound of jazz, nostalgic, Hispanic or gypsy music you will return home with the finest memories of the city. Rich musical programme, fireworks and best mutt competition will be held on 30 June 2013. ARCOTEL Allegra Zagreb invites all fans of good music and entertainment to book their accommodation in time in a city rich with fun events throughout the summer.

ARCOTEL Hotels are a passionate host for BIG and SMALL "...because home is where ARCOTEL is!" Based on this motto we have a great INSIDER tip for the perfect family trip!

In addition to child-friendly activities, which are generally beneficial to the learning process as well as being fun, and open-air activities in natural surroundings, computer games are generally very popular among kids. As a small occasional "reward" why not surprise today's young heroes with a trip to the world’s first computer museum – the first permanent exhibition on digital interactive entertainment culture, opened in 1997.

Sales Representative André Otto
Our Sales Representative André Otto: "A visit to the computer games museum is obligatory during a trip to Berlin. Parents can experience the different eras of video games with their children. Everyone always wants to touch and try things out. From the legendary Pong machines and joysticks to 3D games: the development from clumsy black and white graphics to highly detailed adventure graphics is on show here – quite superb!"

You can admire 300 exhibits on the cultural history of games in a playful and experimental environment. For variety's sake, take your children on an entertaining journey through time for 21st century players.
