ARCOTEL Hotels – The Story of a Name

Founder Raimund D. Wimmer

It all started with the vision of ARCOTEL Hotels founder Raimund Wimmer to develop an Austrian hotel group in which each hotel has its own unique personality. But a great company needs a great name! And so ideas were hatched and suggestions made until, after much discussion, the name ARCOTEL Hotels was born.

the origin logo of the ARCOTEL group

But why ARCOTEL? What is the deeper meaning behind this artificial word? The syllables are easily explained: ARCus (lat. arch) and ÔTEL (German with a French accent, the guesthouse). The name blends two concepts and expresses Raimund Wimmer’s idea of spanning an arc between the host and the guest and offering guests a home from home. This in turn led to our corporate philosophy of "passionate hosts", which the teams at ARCOTEL Hotels having been putting into practice for more than 25 years now.

But the unofficial explanation for the name is this: Raimund Wimmer wanted his guests to find him as quickly as possible. He therefore chose a name that would come pretty near the front of the telephone directory – even in those days, our founder was ahead of his time, because in a way, he was already doing "search engine optimisation" 25 years ago.

The history of the ARCOTEL Moser Verdino - Part 2

The time has finally come for us to fill you in on the more recent chapters of the ARCOTEL Moser Verdino's history. Enjoy!

The Moser family

Maria Josefa's grandson, Johann Nepomuk Moser supported his family as best as he could. Being a passionate host, he was widely known for his excellent social skills, his determination, reliability and kindness. Married to Katharina, the beautiful daughter of Klagenfurt's town magistrate Jesse, Johann Nepomuk lived a long and fulfilled life. At the age of 78, he retired and handed over the business to his children.

His youngest son Viktor took much after his father. He renovated the hotel in 1860 by enlarging it and tiling the roof with red brick tiles, which were rather rare in Klagenfurt at the time. Having lost her husband early into their marriage, Viktor Moser's daughter-in-law Henriette took up the challenge and ran the by then well-established Moser Hotel on her own. However, when Viktor also died on 29 January 1897, she sold the hotel for 75,000 gulden to Julius Verdino.

The Verdinos

Julius Verdino was the son of a well-known and highly respected restaurateur from Glandorf near St. Veit. Shortly after he had bought the hotel, he married Elise Trabesinger, whose affluent father ran a successful inn on the outskirts of Völkermarkt. Having a keen sense for business, Julius took a rather progressive move as early as 1900 by advertising his hotel in the yellow pages and address register of the time called Illustrierter Klagenfurter Haus-, Geschäfts- und Adresskalender. In 1903, he added a third floor to the hotel which saw further expansion and major renovation works from 1905 to 1907 when the building bordering on the west was integrated into the complex and a café was installed.

A committed and much honoured promoter of tourism, Julius Verdino died on 25 January 1913 at the early age of 42, leaving his 14-year old son Georg as well as his 12-year old daughter Elise. Once again a widow had to take charge of the Moser Hotel. A woman of unadorned elegance, Elise Verdino was running a tight ship while her son Georg was trained in hotel management abroad. In January 1928, he married Herta Pfundner, who gave birth to their daughter Elisabeth-Charlotte shortly afterwards. After Georg's death, Herta took over and ran the business as senior manager until her own dying day on 11 September 1941.

During World War II, British occupying forces seized the building and kept it under control until March 1954. In September of the same year, Elisabeth-Charlotte reopened the hotel including its café and bar. She managed to attract Carinthia's who-is-who thanks to constantly keeping her finger on the pulse of time and hosting twist parties in the 1950s for example. After tax legislation had led to significant changes in the staffing structure in 1972, however, Liselotte decided to withdraw from business and sell the beautiful hotel to Erste Allgemeine Versicherungs-AG in 1979.

A new era

The years to come saw another full overhaul of the building, which was rented and run together with the café by the famous confectioners Musil until 1999.

At that time, the renowned Austrian hotel group ARCOTEL Hotels & Resorts took over and has ever since managed the business with extraordinary success.

This was the amazing history of the ARCOTEL Moser Verdino Klagenfurt! We hope you enjoyed reading it and maybe we will see anytime in Klagenfurt!

The history of the ARCOTEL Moser Verdino - Part 1

ARCOTEL Hotels celebrate  25-years jubilee  – and this is a reason to celebrate.
But we also celebrate - The ARCOTEL Moser Verdino has it's 15-year jubilee! True to the motto "Polyglott since 1858" we would like to say thank you to all our guests for your trust and we are looking forward on many more years!

For this special occasion we want to present you the amazing history of the ARCOTEL Moser Verdino - today we start with part 1

The fascinating history of the ARCOTEL Moser Verdino Klagenfurt is steeped in the historical developments of the city. But read up for yourself!

The history of the ARCOTEL Moser Verdino started out with a small gate in the city walls of Klagenfurt called Schlupf. This gate enabled easy access to the city since contrary to the other city gates its key was in private hands. For this reason, the door could be opened at will whenever the need arose.

In 1514, a great fire ravaged large parts of Klagenfurt. During the reconstruction works, a small house was built on the site of the Schlupf, whose owners readily took up and cherished the special atmosphere of the place.

All the people who have worked in this building ever since have offered some sort of shelter by providing board and/or lodging. In 1680, the Klagenfurt merchant Georg Struggl and his wife Elisabeth bought the building and turned it into a hotel. Later on, their son Martin fell in love at first sight with the adorable daughter of an iron ore mine operator, Maria Josefa, who he married in 1723.

In 1723, Georg Struggl's son Martin married Maria Josefa, whose father owned several iron ore mines and nail forges.

Fate had it that Maria Josefa lost her husband quite early into their marriage which forced her to run the business all on her own. When a second big fire hit Klagenfurt, large parts of the city including the hotel were severely damaged. The neighbour's son, Josef Moser helped Maria Josefa with the comprehensive reconstruction works, during which they fell in love with each other. After only a short while, Maria Josefa got pregnant with the first of their altogether eight children. They spent a wonderful 18 years together but then Josef Moser died and Maria Josefa was once again left to fight for herself. Unwilling to give in to her fate, she held her ground and invested all her strength into the family business and the upbringing of her children. Over the years, Maria Josefa became a much loved and respected landlady thus laying the foundations for the hotel's excellent reputation.

In part two of the story, you will find out the family history of the Mosers, the Verdinos and the subsequent history of the ARCOTEL Moser Verdino!

Hochosterwitz Castle – a TOP destination in Carinthia

Hochosterwitz Castle is one of the most picturesque castles in Austria. It is located in today’s municipality of St. Georgen am Längsee, east of St. Veit an der Glan, and is one of the landmarks of Austria’s federal province of Carinthia. Standing on a Dolomite rock, rising 175 metres above the village, it was first mentioned in records in 860.

To fortify the castle against the impending Turkish invasion, George Baron of Khevenhüller had 14 gates built on the path leading to the castle. Owing to this protection, the castle was never taken. The use of such a large number of obstacles to defend a path leading to a castle is rather rare and is considered unique in castle construction.
(C) Burg Hochosterwitz
The castle has been continuously owned by the Khevenhüller family up to the present day and can be reached either on foot or by a lift. Hochosterwitz Castle is an exciting destination for young and old.

14 gates lead to the medieval castle and its armoury, museum, collection of arms and other historical collections. The small castle chapel is decorated with remarkable murals on walls and ceiling. The castle’s restaurant, which offers a magnificent panoramic view of the surrounding area, serves delightful Austrian cuisine.
(C) Burg Hochosterwitz
The castle’s restaurant, museum and passenger lift are available from April up to and including 1 November. Enjoy the romantic atmosphere of the castle and the unique view of a historically rich part of Carinthia.

KLAGENFURT – The Rose of Lake Wörthersee

Yes, yes, everyone knows the “Schloss am Wörthersee” TV series – and it’s surely very exciting too. But today I’m not looking forward to the Klagenfurt from the television. Today I am exploring the city behind the idyllic image in the glossy brochures…

9.30 a.m.: “Good things come in small packages”, or even better, “small, but punches above its weight”:  A real insider’s tip, because it’s different, extremely stylish, food for the soul and soothing for the senses. And to crown it all off: the courtyard through the back that is open all year long – protected from the elements with a sail-cloth covering, heated and furnished with comfy chairs, it invites you to relax and unwind – just magnificent.

More information available at: www.petitcafe.at

11:30 a.m.: After a plentiful breakfast that is enough for the whole day, I set off on a rather special shopping trip based on the motto of “shop till you drop":

Destination 1: Veinzelstück: Ideal for those who are not looking for mass products, but for something special. A young label that stands for daring kids’ stuff and high-quality accessories for children and adults. And the best thing of all is that each article is made in small batches by hand.

More information available at: www.veinzelstueck.at

Destination 2: Mass products, no thanks; get down to Vintagebox. Unique products as far as the eye can see, and, designed and produced personally by the shop-owner – using nothing but environmentally friendly materials. What you can find: pictures, small side tables, little boxes, cushions, decorations, gifts and small souvenirs, all designed with a unique interpretation of vintage products.

More information available at: www.vintagebox.at

Destination 3: “I want a house, a multi-coloured house…" – or better still, a villa. And if I can’t live in it, then I can at least shop in it. An ingenious idea, sure to fulfil many dreams. This sweet villa with a blooming garden and a shop featuring a retro country house design simply enthralled me and it just doesn’t want to let me go, funny, isn’t it?! I feel as if I have just arrived home and I want to buy everything, or better still, just hang around … but unfortunately, everyone wakes up from their dreams sooner or later.

More information available at: www.villa-lotta.at

8.00 p.m.: This day has just been magical, and so it needs its own soundtrack. No sooner said than done – at least this is the time for music, or more precisely, for Europe’s largest keyboard museum. This is a real highlight for music lovers. Vintage keyboards from global stars are on display in a 1700 m² exhibition. This unique location also regularly offers live concerts.

More information available at: www.eboardmuseum.com

10.00 p.m.: To finish off I visit the scene for art, culture and anti-mainstream sound: ((stereo)) – Club & Culture Events Centre.

More information available at: www.stereoclub.at
