ARCOTEL Moser Verdino Winter Special

The city has much to offer in the winter too, not just in the summer. Just outside the city, both young and not so young cross-country skiers con enjoy some time on the snow-covered fields. Only five minutes by car from the city centre you will find the "Schleppe-Alm", a small but fantastic winter sports centre with lifts, slopes, cross-country tracks and sledge runs for kids.

Other skiing areas such as the "Nassfeld" and the "Turracher Höhe", can be reached in only half an hour by car. When the temperatures drop you can ice-skate on the Lendkanal and the Kreuzbergl ponds, while if Lake Wörthersee freezes over it becomes the largest open-air skating rink in Austria.

From "Trichter" to hotel

"Beim Trichter", this is the name of the street connecting Zirkusweg with Reeperbahn, and the ARCOTEL Onyx Hamburg is situated on the triangular piece of land bordered by these three streets.

Today it is principally a meeting place for business people and individual tourists, but roughly 150 years ago there was a small wooden pavilion in the form of a funnel. Back then, this part of the city was known as the district before the "Millerntor". Nobody suspected that it would one day become probably the most famous part of Hamburg, if not in the whole of Germany. The "Trichter" (funnel) quickly became a popular place to be, where small refreshments were available along with dancing and music from time to time.

During the period of the French occupation around 1806, the Reeperbahn was considered the "promenade d'amusement entre Hambourg et Altona". For the first time, the "Trichter" offered something quite spectacular: a panoramic rotunda was added, in which landscapes, mythological scenes or historical events could be viewed with a 360° panorama.

In 1814 the suburb was almost completely destroyed by fire, which engulfed the "Trichter" too. After being rebuilt in 1820 with an open veranda and billiards room it was bought by restaurateur Theodor Mutzenbecher and replaced with a more solid building. The "Trichter" was renamed by the new owner, and called "Mutzenbecher's Beer Hall".

You can "experience" just how this exciting piece of history continued to develop (from beer hall to concert hall) and how it eventually took on its current form of the 4-star-superior ARCOTEL Onyx Hotel by visiting our themed room, the "Kiez room" with original exhibits and photos from the St. Pauli Museum.

November is drawing to a close, the days are becoming shorter again, and slowly but surely everyone is getting into a festive mood. Of course, this time of year we cannot miss out on the Christmas markets, and there are plenty in Hamburg to choose from. Gift ideas with a difference can be found well on into the night in Hamburg's most frivolous Christmas market – Santa Pauli – on the Reeperbahn. If you're looking for something a little quieter and cosier then you're best to visit the traditional Christmas markets, such as the one on the Rathausmarkt with its arts, crafts and carvings. One particular highlight here is Father Christmas, who hovers above the Christmas market with his sledge every day at 4.00pm, 6.00pm and 8.00pm.

Winter magic in Vienna

The beautiful Austrian capital offers a multitude of recreational activities in winter. There is something for everyone: afternoon activities for the whole family and evening entertainment for adults. We have put together a selection of highlights for you.

Christmas markets

 Whether the thermometer shows sub-zero temperatures or it's snowing or cloudy, Vienna's Christmas markets always pull in the crowds. From 17th November to 24th December 2012, special-oaccasion markets are held at more than ten locations all over Vienna where Christmas decoration, arts and crafts, essential oil burners, Christmas presents, sandwiches and ginger bread, thea, mulled wine, punch and other goodies are on offer. The most popular markets are those in front of the City Hall, in front of Schönbrunn Palace, at the Spittelberg quarter and on Karlsplatz square.

New Year's Eve

In the night from 31st of December 2012 to 1st of January 2013, Vienna's city centre is transformed into a New Year's Eve Trail with numerous stages. They welcome visitors from Austria and abroad to their large variety of shows and music. All those, who prefer to celebrate New Year's Eve on a more comfortable note have a large choice of restaurants on the Kahlenberg and Wilhelminenberg mountains on the fringe of Vienna, offeriing a stunning view of the whole city.

Ball season 2012

Grab the chance and see Vienna's historic buildings wonderfully decked out for the ball season. The largest of the more than 100 Viennese balls are held at Hofburg Palace between December 2012 and late February 2013. The most famous ball is the Opera Ball at the Vienna State Opera but others such as the Physicians' Ball, the Hunters' Ball or the Ball of the Viennese Coffee House Owners are vertainly worht a visit.

Theatre Night in Zagreb

ARCOTEL Rubin, 5 years – a "small anniversary"

It's amazing just how fast time passes. To us it seems like only yesterday that we opened the glass doors of the ARCOTEL Rubin at the grand opening for guests. But in actual fact, this took place 5 years ago on 26 October 2007. Back then the media reported that "ARCOTEL Rubin offers top quality comfort and convenience with a natural but outstanding service, combining modern life, cosmopolitanism and a love for tradition in a contrasting yet uniform manner." Today we can proudly say that these same values still underlie all the work we do.

Since we are always on the look-out for a good reason to celebrate, we took the opportunity of this small anniversary on 26 October 2012 to take stock of the last five years with our guests and neighbours from the district of St. Georg over coffee and cakes. Many guests spontaneously struck up a rendition of Happy Birthday when enjoying a welcome drink from our mobile bar, to express their congratulations on our 5th birthday. We are now already asking ourselves what we could do if we meet together in another five years to celebrate the 10th anniversary of ARCOTEL Rubin.

 

 MUSICAL CATS IN STUTTGART

 The globally successful musical celebrates its premiere in Stuttgart on 4th November

... and the audience are closer than ever before to the colourful turbulence of the cat ball. This is because the CATS specially designed grand theatre tent has a large, circular stage, up to three quarters of which is surrounded by audience seating. The production is returning therefore to its roots - the much celebrated world premier on the round stage of the New London Theatre.

There are lots of places where you can see out 2012 and give a fitting welcome to 2013. Naturally, we are biased and can imagine no finer place than Hamburg. At the turn of the New Year you can really make a noise here, whether it’s on land at small or large parties, or on the water on the Rivers Elbe and Alster.

There is an unimaginable range of possibilities, from large New Year’s Eve parties through to lively boat parties, where you can watch the fantastic, colourful fireworks in Hamburg’s skies from the water. On board you can pop the champagne corks and enjoy a New Year’s Eve buffet in a pleasant atmosphere with musical entertainment. Art event at the ARCOTEL Nike

A truly amazing art event took place at the KÉ café & bar on 06. September 2012.

German artist Jochen Detscher presented great pictures which can be admired at the ARCOTEL Nike until December 2012.

The winetasting of award-winning Austrian vine dressers S. Donaubaum and J. Heinrich was very much appreciated by the guests who were also spoiled with culinary treats prepared by chef Markus Kainberger and his team.

No wonder that General Manager Rinaldo Bortoli was very happy to welcome more than 70 guests. The relaxing evening in sophisticated ambience ended long after the wine tasting accompanied by live piano music.
