Winter magic in Vienna

The beautiful Austrian capital offers a multitude of recreational activities in winter. There is something for everyone: afternoon activities for the whole family and evening entertainment for adults. We have put together a selection of highlights for you.
Christmas markets

 Whether the thermometer shows sub-zero temperatures or it's snowing or cloudy, Vienna's Christmas markets always pull in the crowds. From 17th November to 24th December 2012, special-oaccasion markets are held at more than ten locations all over Vienna where Christmas decoration, arts and crafts, essential oil burners, Christmas presents, sandwiches and ginger bread, thea, mulled wine, punch and other goodies are on offer. The most popular markets are those in front of the City Hall, in front of Schönbrunn Palace, at the Spittelberg quarter and on Karlsplatz square.
New Year's Eve

In the night from 31st of December 2012 to 1st of January 2013, Vienna's city centre is transformed into a New Year's Eve Trail with numerous stages. They welcome visitors from Austria and abroad to their large variety of shows and music. All those, who prefer to celebrate New Year's Eve on a more comfortable note have a large choice of restaurants on the Kahlenberg and Wilhelminenberg mountains on the fringe of Vienna, offeriing a stunning view of the whole city.
Ball season 2012

Grab the chance and see Vienna's historic buildings wonderfully decked out for the ball season. The largest of the more than 100 Viennese balls are held at Hofburg Palace between December 2012 and late February 2013. The most famous ball is the Opera Ball at the Vienna State Opera but others such as the Physicians' Ball, the Hunters' Ball or the Ball of the Viennese Coffee House Owners are vertainly worht a visit.
