Stuttgart - more than just a city of cars

Schillerplatz, Picture: Stuttgart Marketing

Over the centuries the city of Stuttgart has grown into a modern metropolis, where despite the destruction suffered during World War II, architecturally valuable buildings still bear testimony to the past. These architectural gems include Schillerplatz with the Old Castle as a Renaissance ensemble, the Baroque New Palace, which was the residence of the dukes and later kings of Württemberg, and the Classical colonnaded Königsbau. Stuttgart’s museums provide information about all periods of history from prehistoric times to the present day and cover world history, international history and, of course, local history.

The City Archive can justifiably be called the heart of the city, as it houses all the City Council’s documents and these are available to the public for information purposes or research. In addition, it also has an extensive collection of non-official documents and other items which are an enduring testimony to the city’s history. To bring this history to life more vividly, a City of Stuttgart Museum is to be opened in 2016 in the Wilhelm’s Palace on Charlottenplatz, in the building that used to house the Municipal Library – an appropriate and central location for a museum.

The Children’s Museum in the “Young Castle” and the House of History prove that Stuttgart’s history has plenty to interest to local residents, tourists and children alike. These museums have come up with a very special concept that enables educators to introduce children to local history topics in a playful way. This also includes letting visitors touch things and this, of course, delights adults who have remained young at heart as much as it does the children. In addition, the museums also offer special children’s tours, workshops, activities and holiday programmes where everyone can join in. As well as the large museums, there are a host of small museums dedicated to specialist themes.

Thanks to the Porsche and the Mercedes Benz Museum, Stuttgart is an absolute “must” for car lovers. You can indulge your passion for automobiles and tradition with a three-day stay at the ARCOTEL Camino Stuttgart, with a package that includes two nights in a double room with a buffet breakfast, free admission to the two museums and a 3-day pass for public transport. Act II: What a (Theatre)Performance in St. Pauli

St. Pauli, or more specifically the Reeperbahn, also known as the most sinful mile in the world, is one of Hamburg’s leading tourist attractions. But locals too have always enjoyed spending time on “Sin Street” and seeing one of the many brilliant shows or theatre productions there.

In Act I we introduced the St. Pauli Theater, the Schmidt Theater and Schmidts TIVOLI. Now, we would like to present three other houses that are not far from the ARCOTEL Onyx Hamburg.

Act II:
TUI Operettenhaus
Fliegende Bauten
Imperial Theater

TUI Operettenhaus
The TUI Operettenhaus is right next door to the ARCOTEL Onyx. If you’re quick on your feet, you can get from your room to your theatre seat in just 3 minutes. The house belongs to the Stage Entertainment group and for years has been THE stage for smash musicals in Hamburg. The theatre was originally built in 1841 as the Circus Gymnasticus. Of course, since then it has been modernised several times and can now seat more than 1,300 people. The most successful musical was Cats, which delighted audiences for 14 years. The TUI Operettenhaus is currently showing ROCKY, a musical based on the film of the same name. The premiere last year was even attended by Sylvester Stallone himself.
Current highlight: Rocky
Programme: Programme

Fliegende Bauten
The architecture alone makes this theatre in Hamburg unique. It consists of a four-mast big top that can seat 600 people, and several small containers. The programme is wide-ranging and cabaret, concerts, contemporary circus and theatre performances leave guests marvelling. Its history dates back to 1980 when the two founders Matthias Kraemer and Sebastiano Toma toured Germany with a tent and mobile home. Then in 2002 the Fliegende Bauten settled down beside the old fortifications near the Reeperbahn in Hamburg. For 12 years the programme has been delighting audiences who come from far beyond Hamburg or even Germany to see performances. The current highlight is The Great Dance of Argentina - El Sonido de mi Tierra, a unique show that mixes dance, music, rhythm, percussion, step dance, tango and artistic performances.
Current Highlight: The Great Dance of Argentina
Programme: Programme

Imperial Theater
The Imperial has had a very turbulent history indeed. In the early days it mainly featured musical theatre productions. After being refurbished and reopened in 1994 the theatre racked up successes with musicals such as Grease and the Rocky Horror Show. Today, it stands above all for crime thrillers and is now popularly known as the “crime theatre”. Classic mysteries such as Agatha Christie’s Mouse Trap, the world famous Arsenic and Old Lace and, of course,Edgar Wallace adaptations such as The Ringer or the Strange Countess are especially popular with audiences. Yet despite all the tension, there is always plenty of humour as director Frank Thannhäuser brings in elements from the much-loved black and white film classics from the 1960s.
Current Highlight: The Dead Eyes of London

A Day in Vienna - Things You Shouln't Miss!

The best way to start the day in vienna is with a hearty breakfast at the ARCOTEL Wimberger Vienna. under the motto Regional | Homemade | Fresh the hotel offers a varie selection of disches that includes something for everyone.

So, once you have got your strength up, it's time to set off on you tour of the city. The first stop is the Westbahnhof railwas station where we catch the U3 to Stephansplatz (in the direction of Simmering). What better place could there be to start a tour of vienna than the city's most famour monument - St. Stephans's Cathedral. From there, continue over the Graben to de Spanisch Riding School, which is less than 10 minutes' away on foot. Once you geht there, yo have a number of options such as watching the horses do their morning training or getting a glimpse behind the scenes on a guided tour.

After passing the Albertina, whisch is only a couple of hundred metres away, you should continue Vienna State Opera. If you like, you can book a tour of the opera house here. But if you don't fancy that, the State Oopera is an architecturally impressive sight from the outside too.
through Operngasse to de

As it will soon be time for lunch, we suggest that you take the U2 metro as far as Museumsquartier. As the name indicates, this area is home to a number of Museums, such as the mumok (Museum of Modern Art) and the Leopold Museum, but it is also a grat place to have Lunch. MQ boasts a varity of 10 cafés and restaurants.

If you need a stroll to walk off you lunch, then cover the two stations to Rathausplatz on foot, otherwise take de U2 metro line to get there in comfort. Rathausplatz is a great place for entertainment at any time of the year. In summer it is the venue for a variety of concert broadcasts, in the run-up to Christmas it hosts the traditional Christmas market which is then followed by an ice-skating rink.

When you have finished here, you should get back on the U2 to got to the Prater, of more precisely, to the Giant Ferris Wheel. For how can cou come to Vienna without taking a ride on the world famous Giant Ferris Wheel? We suggest that you buy your tickets in advance online to avoid long queues at the ticket office.

And as you're probaly getting hungry again, you might fancy going on to the Donauturm observation tower and restaurant. For that, you need to take the U1 metro which will carry you across the Danube. From the Alte Donau station it is about a 20 minute walk to the tower in the Donaupark and then there´s a lift to the restauran. The most stunning feature: the 150m high restaurant rotates around its own axis giving a perfect panorama view ofer the roofs of Vienna. And if that isn't enough, you can also enjoy Vienna's fantastic lights from the open-air observation deck or the two-floor indoor gallery with its floor-to-ceiling windows.

Process the impressions of the day on a 15 minute walk back to the nearest U6 station (Neue Donau) which will take you directly to the Burggasse/Stadthalle station. From there, you'll only need three minutes and you'll be lying in a soft bed at the ARCOTEL Wimberger Vienna...
