Review: ARCOTEL Onyx Hamburg has the "Most Stylish Toilet 2013"

ARCOTEL Hotels was delighted to be presented with a somewhat different type of award in March 2013: The toilets in the ARCOTEL Onyx Hamburg, which was newly opened in 2012, were voted by Tempo as the "Most Stylish Toilet 2013".

The address of the hotel, Reeperbahn 1A, suggests the need for a very unique type of toilet. The owner of the ARCOTEL Group, Dr. Renate Wimmer, also recognised this and set up a "public toilet workgroup" for this purpose. "We all delved into our imaginations at the first meeting – someone even suggested a 'dog toilet'", says Dr. Renate Wimmer. It was important, however, that the toilets weren’t too strange. This gave Dr. Renate Wimmer the idea of using mosaic art to create a magnificent male figure in the ladies’ toilets and a seductive female figure in the men’s toilets. The stylish works of art were created from individual stones and hand-fitted. An additional highlight for the ladies’ toilets: visitors have a choice of cubicle size - S, M, L and XL.

ARCOTEL owner Dr. Renate Wimmer, along with the entire team at ARCOTEL Onyx Hamburg, is pleased to be presented with this very unique award. "Our thanks go to Tempo for organising this excellent and ‘somewhat different’ competition. Most importantly, thank you to our guests! We are delighted that visitors to the ARCOTEL Onyx Hamburg enjoy even the toilet facilities", says Dr. Renate Wimmer.

Anyone wanting to visit this special toilet should arrange a visit to Hamburg straight away!

ARCOTEL Wimberger is Celebrating 20 Years "Colourful as Life"

The "Wimberger" has always been at the heart of the action. And that hasn't changed since 1870. Because whenever people gather to celebrate life, the hotel has a long tradition of joining in the party. In 1874 the Viennese hotelier Karl Wimberger became a pioneer in the field of Viennese event culture, when during the carnival season he recommended the "luxurious, comfortable and newly furnished function rooms" on the first floor of his new hotel "for small parties, balls, weddings and club evenings".

But competition was fierce. At the same time, the Sophien-Säle, the Künstlerhaus, the Blumen-Säle and last but not least, Schwender's Colosseum were already regularly hosting the legendary "Monstre-Masked Ball" that dominated the festivities in the imperial capital alongside more aristocratic balls. Nevertheless just a few years later, one of the leading Viennese folk singers, Carl "Shall we drink another bottle of wine" Lorens, described the popular carnival revels with the following words:
"At Gschwandtner and Stalehner / We get to know each other, / At Wimberger the party goes on / Always light-hearted and gay."

Over the years the hotel thus became the venue for an unusual mix of political and cultural gatherings, masked balls and military music concerts. So it can definitely be said that the Hotel Wimberger has a tradition of grand festivities and reconciling differences.
And that didn't change much after ARCOTEL Hotels took over and revamped the hotel. Or do you know any other hotel in Vienna where hungry visitors to an Anna Netrebko concert would run into participants from the Tattoo Convention Vienna at the Restaurant WIMBERGERs wia z'Haus and then spend the rest of the evening dancing together to rock music until the early hours?

On 30 April 2014 we again proved that the ARCOTEL Wimberger can still celebrate legendary festivities in style. To mark the occasion of our 20th anniversary we invited some 100 guests to an evening full of magic. While magician ChristianChristian whisked guests away into a world of illusion, executive chef Peter Lerner conjured up a delicious 4-course meal. Guests danced until the early hours to rock and soul classics performed by the Betty Blue band and whiled away time reminiscing as they took a walk down memory lane.

Discover the secrets of St. Pauli

The ARCOTEL Onyx is situated on the Reeperbahn at the heart of Hamburg’s famous entertainment district St. Pauli and we like to think that this unique location is reflected in the character of the hotel. The key to understanding it is to get out and explore the fascinating area in which it is located.
To celebrate 25 years of ARCOTEL Hotels we invited guests to join us for an extraordinary tour of Hamburg’s most famous quarter.

And what better starting-point for any tour of the ‘Kiez’ (the local name for this district) than our Kiez room! Directly overlooking the Reeperbahn it gives a real feel’ for the character of this part of Hamburg and is furnished in suitably exotic style, with a purple designer sofa, a headboard in the shape of a pair of lips and a pole-dancing pole! The room also features a glass cabinet containing original exhibits from the St. Pauli Museum, carefully chosen to give a flavour of life in the ‘Kiez’ and how it has changed over the years.

Just a few minutes walk from the ARCOTEL Onyx, and directly opposite the Davidwache police station, is the Casino Reeperbahn. Visitors to the authentically-styled casino suite can learn all about the fascinating world of poker and even get to try out their skills (with guidance, of course) in a friendly tournament. Don’t forget these tips from the professionals – always keep your opponent guessing, brush up on that probability theory… and don’t forget the dark glasses!

The next stop on our tour is the St. Pauli Museum in Davidstrasse. A walk around this collection of unique exhibits gives a real insight into the eventful history of the St. Pauli district from medieval times right up to the present day. Find out what the origins of this ‘naughty’ part of town have to do with, of all things, a monastery, why Herbertstrasse has gates to keep out prying eyes and why Nutella is much more than just something you spread on your bread! And when you have had enough history for the day, there is always table football to keep you amused or maybe a drink and some live music in the museum’s trendy bar.

Those on the lookout for a good place to eat will find the ideal spot just a few yards away - the Schatto Pauli theatre restaurant. Whether you are off to the theatre or sampling the city’s nightspots, a tourist or a local - at Schatto Pauli every guest is king! What better way to get your evening started than to sit at a long table with friends old and new and soak up the charming, rustic atmosphere of this wonderful eatery? The house speciality, the legendary “Original Wiener Schnitzel”, is definitely a treat too good to miss. And with the Schmidts TIVOLI theatre literally just the other side of the wall, the Schatto Pauli could not be more convenient for theatregoers.

Our tour takes us finally next door to the famous Schmidts TIVOLI theatre and its long-running hit musical “Heisse Ecke”, set in St. Pauli. Since it opened back in 2003, this ever-popular Kiez classic has entertained over 1.5 million people, making it the most successful German-language musical production to date. The cast of nine actors and actresses take on over 50 different roles in a fast-paced show based on different stories played out over a period of 24 hours at the local “Heisse Ecke” snack-bar. With music from a superb live orchestra this really is an exciting production, which offers us a glimpse of the craziness of day-to-day life on the Reeperbahn.

As things start to really get going in the many bars and clubs clustered along the Reeperbahn, so our tour of Hamburg’s ‘saucy’ side ends, appropriately enough, with a currywurst and a bottle of Astra beer at the “Heisse Ecke” snack bar across the road from the theatre.
Like the sound of this amazing tour? Then join us at the ARCOTEL Onyx on the Reeperbahn!

WHISKY TASTING

6 FEBRUARY 2014 starting 7.00 p.m.
As our whisky tastings have recently focused on the different regions of Scotland, it is now time to stop off at the last Scottish region, Speyside.

SPEYSIDE
Speyside is the region that runs along the river Spey and is the appellation for whiskies produced by the roughly 50 distillers in the region to distinguish them from others produced elsewhere in Scotland. Speyside is main whisky region in Scotland not just because it has the largest number of distilleries and also the most productive; it is also home to malt houses, cooperages, blenders and (independent) bottlers. Many of the Speyside distilleries are just a few kilometres apart from one another; some are even just around the corner from each other, as is the case in towns like Dufftown (sometimes called the secret capital of whisky), Elgin or Rothes. Well-known Speyside distilleries include Aberlour, Cragganmore, Glenlivet, Glenfiddich, Glen Grant and Macallan. The Malt Whisky Trail – a tourist route that links eight of the more well-known distilleries and one cooperage - is also on Speyside.

PROGRAMME
Our barkeeper and self-professed whisky lover Marcel Klopp will guide you through this whisky tasting accompanied by suitable culinary creations. An ideal opportunity to enjoy the selected specialities and talk shop with the presenter.

THE SPECIALITIES OF THE EVENING
Matching culinary creations put together by our kitchen brigade under executive chef Michael Steeb.

From the range of high-quality whiskies from Speyside:

  • Balvenie
  • Glenfarclas
  • Car´dhu
  • Aberlour
  • MaCallan
  • Glenrothes
ADMISSION
Price per person: EUR 45.00
Including finger food. As the number of places is limited, we ask you to book early.

Art & Cultur at KÉ café & bar

A truly amazing art event took place at the KÉ café & bar on 05th December 2013 – as always – in best company!

Andreas Licker and the team of ARCOTEL Nike Linz invited on Thursday, 5th of December, to the last "Art & Culture" event in this year at KÉ café & bar directly at the banks of the river Danube with a wonderful view to the landmark of Linz the "Pöstlingberg". With great pleasure we started with this last Event in 2013 into Christmastime.

(c) Werner Redl
Art & Indulgence
The vintager of the month, the vineyard Anita and Hans Nittnaus from Gols in Burgenland presented selected wines. Exquisite wines were presented and enjoyed in the course of a guided and commented wine tasting.

(c) Werner Redl: Hans Nittnaus
The Linzer artist Gabriele Scharinger presented great pictures which can be admired at the ARCOTEL Nike Linz until March 2014.
(c) Werner Redl
The wine tasting was very much appreciated by the guests who were also spoiled with culinary treats prepared by our chef de cuisine Bernd Waldhäusl and his team. Exquisite delicacies from our cuisine, were served in correspondence to every wine.

No wonder that Andreas Licker was very happy to welcome more than 60 guests. The relaxing evening in sophisticated ambience ended long after the wine tasting accompanied by live piano music from Wolfgang Schnaitl.

It was a very successful evening and we are already looking forward to our next Art & Culture event on 09th January 2014!

Our Forthcoming Art and Culture Exhibition is all about "ARCOTEL Camino – Your Staff "

Thursday, 21 November 2013

The photographer and artist Wolf-Peter Steinheißer has put the spotlight on staff at the ARCOTEL Camino, giving you the chance to see them in a different light. Regardless of whether they belong to the Service team or Reception or work for departments that guests do not usually get to see, such as Bookings or Housekeeping, this exhibition gives you an opportunity to get to know these members of staff from a different perspective.

Wolf-Peter Steinheißer was born in Sonneberg in 1965 and was given his first camera when he was only 6 years old. When he was 13 he had his first session in a photo lab. His love of photography grew and his career took off. He specialised in the field of photography and film production and in 1995 launched his freelance career. The majority of his work is dedicated to advertising, industrial, lifestyle and people photography. He has had numerous exhibitions in Germany and abroad and in 2010 was nominated for the German Photo Book Award. He also holds a position as a lecturer for film and photo production at a university. Wolf-Peter Steinheißer is happily married and lives with his wife and son in Ludwigsburg.

Once again you can look forward to Swabian and Austrian culinary delights conjured up by the capable hands in the kitchen of the Restaurant WEISSENHOF. You can also look forward to the exquisite wines presented by two fantastic wineries, one from Austria and one from the region.

Of course there will also be plenty of musical entertainment as the jazz trio Lounge Experience breathes acoustic life into the photographs by Wolf-Peter Steinheißer.

As the entrance ticket to the exhibition and to taste the wines, you will receive a top-quality ARCOTEL Camino wine glass, which you are welcome to take home with you after the event. Also included in the price is the aforementioned generous ARCOTEL buffet with Swabian and Austrian delicacies. The admission price per person is EUR 14.00

Off and Away

7 Reasons Why We Love City Breaks

Get Away From It All
Get away from it all and spend a few days gathering new impressions. On a city break, the weather is less important than it might otherwise be. What counts is the wide variety of things to doin a city, and with so much to keep us busy we probably won’t even notice if it rains.

A World of Contrasts
Opera or pop concert, musical or theatre, fashionable nightspot or traditional café, museum or cinema, art or street art, shopping or World Cup qualifying match, hammam or the hotel’s own spa, disco or an Irish pub …the choice is virtually unlimited! Simply go with the flow and enjoy the flair of the city!

A Journey of Discovery for the Senses
The importance of culinary enjoyment should never be underestimated on a journey of discovery in a foreign city. Among the many markets that offer a feast of colour and fragrances is the Naschmarkt –probably Vienna’s most popular market with approximately 120 stalls and restaurants and a range of cuisine that could not be more varied. And to be honest, who really wants to count calories on holiday?

Rest and Relaxation on a City Break? Think It’s Impossible? Well It Isn’t! Here is Our Tip:
Make sure your programme has plenty of variety, but don’t forget to include some rest and relaxation. Don’t race from one sight to the next, but leave some time for a break. The many parks and gardens are ideal for a long stroll or how about stopping off at a nice café, where you can sit and watch the hustle and bustle of the city as you relax over a cup of coffee?

Perfect for Singles
During the summer, people who don’t have children are often at a disadvantage when it comes to holiday planning, as many companies let workers with children choose their dates first. But that’s no reason to worry: A couple of days holiday are enough to recharge your batteries and find new energy.

The Essence of Life
The deciding factor when choosing a weekend break is usually the range of cultural activities a city has to offer. But don’t forget to immerse yourself into the real life of a city and take some time to get to know its inhabitants. That not only broadens your horizons, a chat at the newspaper stand will also do you good.

Opportunities as Diverse as the City Itself!
Whether you are looking for a complete package like Venice or a trendy city like Berlin, city breaks offer a host of impressions. The fastest way to discover the sights is to take a guided city tour. In many cases, a history that stretches back over centuries is simply waiting to be discovered. Follow the tracks of the Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown. As well as honingyour skills as an explorer this also offers a certain amount of adventure!

Stuttgart - more than just a city of cars

Schillerplatz, Picture: Stuttgart Marketing

Over the centuries the city of Stuttgart has grown into a modern metropolis, where despite the destruction suffered during World War II, architecturally valuable buildings still bear testimony to the past. These architectural gems include Schillerplatz with the Old Castle as a Renaissance ensemble, the Baroque New Palace, which was the residence of the dukes and later kings of Württemberg, and the Classical colonnaded Königsbau. Stuttgart’s museums provide information about all periods of history from prehistoric times to the present day and cover world history, international history and, of course, local history.

Schlossplatz, Picture: Stuttgart Marketing

The City Archive can justifiably be called the heart of the city, as it houses all the City Council’s documents and these are available to the public for information purposes or research. In addition, it also has an extensive collection of non-official documents and other items which are an enduring testimony to the city’s history. To bring this history to life more vividly, a City of Stuttgart Museum is to be opened in 2016 in the Wilhelm’s Palace on Charlottenplatz, in the building that used to house the Municipal Library – an appropriate and central location for a museum.

The Children’s Museum in the “Young Castle” and the House of History prove that Stuttgart’s history has plenty to interest to local residents, tourists and children alike. These museums have come up with a very special concept that enables educators to introduce children to local history topics in a playful way. This also includes letting visitors touch things and this, of course, delights adults who have remained young at heart as much as it does the children. In addition, the museums also offer special children’s tours, workshops, activities and holiday programmes where everyone can join in. As well as the large museums, there are a host of small museums dedicated to specialist themes.

Mercedes Benz Museum, Picture: Stuttgart Marketing

Thanks to the Porsche and the Mercedes Benz Museum, Stuttgart is an absolute “must” for car lovers. You can indulge your passion for automobiles and tradition with a three-day stay at the ARCOTEL Camino Stuttgart, with a package that includes two nights in a double room with a buffet breakfast, free admission to the two museums and a 3-day pass for public transport. Further information about this special offer is available at www.arcotelhotels.com/camino

If you book a room at the ARCOTEL Camino Stuttgart during the Wasen period using the promotional code “WASEN2013” on our website, you will receive a fantastic 25% reduction on our promo rate. Ideally you should book immediately and make sure that you don’t miss the best time of the year in Stuttgart. We look forward to seeing you.
