The history of the ARCOTEL Moser Verdino - part 3

The time has finally come for us to fill you in on the more recent chapters of the ARCOTEL Moser Verdino's history. Enjoy!
The Verdinos:
Julius Verdino was the son of a well-known and highly respected restaurateur from Glandorf near St. Veit. Shortly after he had bought the hotel, he married Elise Trabesinger, whose affluent father ran a successful inn on the outskirts of Völkermarkt. Having a keen sense for business, Julius took rather progressive move as early as 1900 by advertising his hotel in the yellow pages and address register of the time called "Illustrierter Klagenfurter Haus-, Geschäfts- und Adresskalender". In 1903, he added a third floor to the hotel which saw further expansion and major renovation works from 1905 to 1907 when the building bordering on the west was integrated into the complex and a café was installed.
A committed and much honoured promoter of tourism, Julius Verdino died on 25 January 1913 at the early age of 42, leaving his 14-year old son Georg as well as his 12-year old daughter Elise. Once again a widow had to take charge of he Moser Hotel. A woman of unadorned elegance, Elise Verdino was running a tight ship while her son Georg as trained in hotel management abroad. In January 1928, he married Herta Pfundner, who gave birth to their daughter Elisabeth-Charlotte shortly afterwards. After Georg's death, Herta took over and ran the business as senior manager until her own dying day on 11 September 1941.
During World War II, British occupying forces seized the building and kept it under control until March 1954. In September of the same year, Elisabeth-Charlotte reopened the hotel including its café and bar. She managed to attract Carinthia's who-is-who thanks to constantly keeping her finger on the pulse of time and hosting twist parties in the 1950s for example. After tax legislastion had led to significant changes in the staffing structure in 1972, however, Liselotte decided to withdraw from business and sell the beautiful hotel to "Erste Allgemeine Versicherungs-AG in 1979".

A new era
The years to come saw another full overhaul of the building, which was rented and run togehter with the café by the famous confectioners Musil until 1997.
At that time, the renowned Austrian hotel group ARCOTEL Hotels & Resort took over and has ever since managed the business with extraordinary success.

Easter in Hamburg
Nothing planned yet for the Easter holiday? Then we thoroughly recommend a short break in Hamburg where there is a whole lot more going on than just Easter egg hunts – a wealth of interesting things to see and do over the holiday.A popular attraction are, of course, the traditional Easter bonfires (Osterfeuer) which will be lit at several locations along the river Elbe on Easter Saturday (7th April) as part of the Easter celebrations. And if you really can’t make up your mind which one of the many bonfires to go to, why not enjoy the atmosphere of an Easter bonfire boat trip along the Elbe and get the best possible view of all the bonfires? The trip departs from the St. Pauli Landungsbrücken pier and the journey takes around two hours. With refreshments available on board, you can just sit back and enjoy this amazing spectacle.
Fans of the music of Johannes Brahms, Hamburg’s most famous citizen, will also not be disappointed over Easter. His music is to be the focus of the seventh Hamburg Ostertöne festival to be held at the city’s Laeiszhalle. Now an established part of the musical calendar the festival, which runs from 6 – 9 April, is under the artistic direction of Simone Young, Director of Hamburg’s State Opera. The central theme running through this year’s concerts will be a series of musical arrangements, written for the piano, reflecting the interplay between past and present.
Let’s just hope that the April weather is kind to us and that we will see at least some sunshine over the Easter weekend!
